Fifty people are now known to have died in a shooting in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, the city’s mayor Buddy Dyer has said.
Authorities identified the shooter on Sunday as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old man born in New York with Afghan origins.Mateen, who was armed with an assault-type rifle and a handgun, was killed in a shootout with at least 11 police officers inside the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.Ron Hopper, special FBI agent in charge of the Orlando office, confirmed that Mateen was interviewed twice by the agency in 2013, after he made “inflammatory comments” to co-workers alleging possible”terrorist ties
Meanwhile Mateen’s father told NBC News the attack “had nothing to do with religion”. Seddique Mateen said his son became “very angry” after seeing two men kissing in downtown Miami recently. He said the family had not been aware that Mateen might have been planning an attack. “We are in shock like the whole country.” President Obama condemned the act and saying it was an act of terror and hatred .Condolences to their families.
