Cord has struck a deal and agreed that Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale will replace Mogotio MP Hellen Sambili in the Parliamentary Select committee on IEBC reforms.Khalwale, a staunch supporter of Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang’ula, is among the seven Cord MPs whose names were tabled in the National Assembly yesterday. Parliament is on Tuesday expected to approve the 14 legislators to probe allegations against the IEBC commissioners and the secretariat. They will recommend a legal framework for far-reaching reforms at the electoral agency.
Initially, there was contention between ODM and Ford Kenya as to who would take up Sambili’s slot, after the Kanu MP turned down her appointment by the opposition to the joint committee. Women MPs in Cord had demanded that the slot be given to a woman to ensure gender representation. Cord also picked senators James Orengo (Siaya), Johnstone Muthama (Machakos), Mutula Kilonzo (Makueni) and MPs Mishi Mboko (Mombasa), Junet Mohamed (Suna East) and Eseli Simiyu (Tongaren). The Jubilee wing of the 14-member team will be headed by Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi, who will also double as the co-chairperson. Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen and nominated Senator Beatrice Elachi will also sit in the committee.
